(ENGLISH) One of the potential cause of shame for an Igbo man is if he happens to be uncircumcised. Thus, it is very evident that circumcision is very necessary in Igbo culture and Traditional religion.
WHAT IS CIRCUMCISION The English Dictionary explains it as a "surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis (in men) or the clitoral hood the clitoris (in female). Though in formal times, the Igbo people circumcised both male and female. However, in more contemporary times, the Igbos have restricted the act of circumcision to only male children or Adults
WHO ADMINISTERS CIRCUMCISION It is the work of experts to administer circumcision in other to avoid casualties. In ancient times, the traditional mid-wives or the native doctors did this. Any other person who has it as his/her duty. However, in more contemporary times, the medical practitioners circumcise new born babies in the hospital
WHEN IS CIRCUMCISION DONE Ordinarily in Igbo culture, circumcision is done on the 8th day after birth, that is, two weeks (according to the Igbo traditional way of counting weeks). Though there are some part of Igbo where circumcision is done on the 3rd day after birth. There are, also, rare cases of circumcision as an adult. Though it takes longer time to perform and heal in adults. In children it takes an average of 5 to 7 days to heal.
ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS OF CIRCUMCISION It is believed that the act of circumcision have numerous benefit for the male gender which includes:
- To avoid infections like urinary infections
- To keep the genitalia clean
- Even to control STDs
ARE THERE ANY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCE OF CIRCUMCISION
The few negative consequence of circumcision could include: - The process could be painful.
- There could be infection during the process.
- It can injure the genitalia if not done carefully.
